LE COFFRE-FORT DE MADAME IMBERT...

CHAPITRE - 2 -

- Oh!

Je vais me coucher.  Et toi?
- Je voudrais finir.

Gervaise sort.  Arsène Lupin attend vingt minutes, puis trente.

On respire bien.

in Dover on the south coast of England.  Police suspected that he was trying to get abroad ( al extranjero). Buster Edwards gave himself up  (se rindió)  in 1966.  And Bruce Reynolds -the leader of the gang- was finally caught in 1968.  He was arrested in Torquay, in Devon, and was sent to jail for 25 years.

Two of the gang were not in jail for long.

In August 1964, Charlie Wilson escaped from Birmingham's Winston Green prison when three men broke into the prison to release him (liberarle),  even though prison officers were watching him carefully because they suspected that he was a person likely to try to escape.

In July 1965, Ronnie Biggs got out of Wandsworth prison with three other prisoners while they were walking between the prison buildings.  The four men climbed the 6 metre prison wall using a rope ladder (escalera de cuerda), which had been thrown down by one member of an "escape gang"  outside.

Charlie Wilson went to France and Mexico after his escape, but was finally caught again in Canada in 1967.

Ronnie Biggs finally went to live in Brazil, after first escaping to Australia.  He was still there, living in Rio de Janeiro with his girlfriend and their child but  he has recently  asked for coming back to England because of his age and because he wanted to  die in his country.  Until that moment, English lawyers and the English police couldn't do anything about him!

Four gang members were NEVER caught.

CURIOUS FACTS ABOUT ROBBERIES!!

HECHOS CURIOSOS SOBRE ROBOS.

** The first train to be robbed was in America.  On October 6, 1866, four brothers, John, Simeon, William and Frank Reno, stopped the train near Saymour, Indiana, and stole  10,000 dollars.

** Two other famous train robbers were ROBERT LEROY PARKER and HARRY LONGBAUGH, better known as "Butch Cassidy" and "The Sundance Kid".
These famous criminals robbed trains and banks throughout North and South America in the late 1890s.
From 1901 they lived in South America, and it is believed that they were shot dead by soldiers in Bolivia in 1909.

** Ned Kelly was probably Australia's most famous criminal.
He, his brother Dan, and two other men, were responsible for many robberies during the years 1878 to 1880.
Ned wore a strange metal suit to protect himself, but was finally caught.
He was hanged (ahorcado)  in Melbourne in 1880.

** In January, 1950, seven men, wearing "funny-face" masks, broke into (irrumpieron) the Brinks Armoured Car Company in Boston, America and stole nearly 3 million dollars.  It took 6 years and cost 29 million dollars before the criminals were caught and brought to trial.

"GREAT  CRIMES"

Hi again my dear followers. Today I'm going to start an English  reading. This is a story about a robbery, a train robbery.
Many of us love reading about crime and robberies in the newspapers and reading stories about Sherlock Holmes and the other great detectives.
This story  is about a famous train robbery which happened in 1963.

"THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY"  by John Escott - OXFORD BOOKWORMS - Oxford University Press (ISBN 0-19-422850-9)

Chapter 1.
In the early hours of August 9, 1963, the night mail train from Glasgow to London's King's Cross Station was making good time.  But for the driver, 58-year-old Jack Mills, and his assistant, 26-year old David Whitby, this would be a night that they would remember for the rest of their lives.  Mills, especially, would always be a sick man and, indeed, would die young, after what was about to happen!

Nearly all the train's  12 coaches (vagones)  were used as offices for the ROYAL MAIL, for sorting (clasificar)  the letters and packets into groups for different towns and cities.
One special coach -for valuable packets- was carrying 128 bags of old money.
The money was old banknotes (billetes)which were on their way to the Royal Mint (La Fábrica de la Moneda) -the place where banknotes are made- to be destroyed.

At 3.03 a.m., almost 80 kilometres from London and near the small village of Cheddington, Jack Mills suddenly saw a red signal.  He immediately brought his engine to a stop.  It was unusual to find a red signal here, so David Whitby got out of the engine to walk to the emergency telephone, which was behind a signal box.  But two men in black balaclava helmets (pasamontañas)  came out of the darkness and pushed him down on the ground at the side of the railway.  One man told Whitby: "If you shout, I'll kill you"!

Two men climbed into the engine and Jack Mills tried to fight them.  One of the men hit Mills over the head.  Meanwhile, others in the gang (banda) quietly and efficiently unfastened the ten sorting coaches at the back of the train, leaving just the front two fastened to the engine.  The valuable packets coach was the second of these.

David Whitby was brought back and the robbers made Jack Mills drive the train very slowly to Bridego Bridge, 600 metres down the railway.  They left the other ten coaches behind -the 70 sorters (tipos) still working inside them did not realize waht was happening.

Other gang members wearing balaclavas and army uniforms were waiting at the bridge whith Land Rovers and a three-tonne army lorry (camión).  They had tied (atado) something white to a stick by the railway to mark the place where they wanted te engine to stop.

They broke the windows of the valuable packets coach and made the Post Office sorters lie down (tumbarse) on the floor.  Next, the robbers passed 120 bags of old banknotes out into the darkness.

Fifteen minutes later, the rain robbers put handcuffs (esposas) on Mills and Whitby and warned (advirtieron) them not to try to escape for at least half an hour.  Then, leaving 8 bags behind, they disappeared into the night.

CHAPTER  2.
The robbery had taken a total of 24 minutes.  The 120 mailbags contained 2.5 million pounds in old notes.  It was at the time, the biggest robbery ever!
The newspapers were soon calling it "the crime of the century", and the Post Office quickly offered 10,000 pounds for information that would lead (conducir) to the arrest of the robbers.

How did the robbers change the railway signal from "GO" yo "STOP"?  was one of the first things detectives wanted to know.  They soon had the answer.  The robbers had covered the green "GO" signal with a glove (guante), then used their own red light which they had brought with them.

But, WHERE WERE THEY NOW?

Weeks before, the gang had bought an old farmhouse -called Leatherslade Farm- about 50 kilometres from the bridge.  They went there after the robbery to count their money.  Each man would get more than 150,000 pounds.

They had planned to stay at the farmhouse for four days, but during the afternoon of Thursday, August 8,  they heard something on the radio news that  made them change their plans.  Buckinghamshire Police announced that they were sure the gang were hiding not more than 50 km from Bridego Bridge.  In fact, the police were only guessing this because Mills and Whitby had been told not to try to get help for 30 minutes.  The gang would have needed longer than this to go more than 50 km to a hiding-place (lugar para esconderse).

The gang left Leatherslade Farm on Friday, August 9.
By the following Monday  the police had found the farmhouse where they were hiding.  Inside were Post Office mailbags.  Before long detectives had found the fingerprints (huellas dactilares) of several people in the gang, some of whom were well-known criminals -Bruce Reynolds, Buster Edwards, Ronnie Biggs, Bob Welch, Roy James, John Daly and Charlie Wilson.

NOW THE JOB OF FINDING THEM BEGAN!

CHAPTER 3
Roger Cordrey, who had fixed the railway signal to show red instead of green, and Bill Boal, another of the robbers, tried to find a garage for their van (furgoneta) in  Bournemouth.  But they picked the wrong person to ask.
The owner of the garage was the widow (viuda) of a policeman, and she immediately suspected something when the robbers paid her from a thick (grueso) packet of banknotes.  She phoned the police while the two men were putting their van into the garage.  The police caught them and found 78,892 pounds in the van.

More of the money was found in four suitcases in a wood (bosque) in Surrey, on August 16.  Then another 30,000 pounds was discovered in the ceiling (techo) of a caravan parked near the wood.

By the end of the year most of the gang had been caught.  Charlie Wilson was arrested without any trouble at his Clapham home.
Roy James was more difficult to catch.  He was hiding in a house in St John's Wood in north London.  But when he saw the police, James took a bag containing 12,000 pounds and climbed up on to the roof (tejado) to try and escape.  He jumped and ran along neighbours' roofs, but more than 40 policemen were in the surrounding streets and James finally jumped down into the waiting arms of one of them.

John Daly was arrested the same day.
Buster Edwards, Bruce Reynolds and Jimmy White were not found.  And so was 2 million pounds.
The trial (juicio)  of the others began on January 24, 1964.  The police did not want the trial to take place at the Old Bailey -the famous London criminal court - because they were afraid powerful London criminals might frighten people on the jury.

All the prisoners were tried (juzgados) together, and all but Roger Cordrey pleaded not guilty.  The trial took two months.

Neither Jack Mills nor David Whitby could be sure which had been the men behind the balaclavas and nobody had seen the robbers at the farm.  But the lawyers brought in a total of 200 witnesses, the judge took six days to talk to the jury, and the jury took two days to decide that all the robbers except John Daly were guilty.
The guilty men were sent to prison for up to 30 years.

Jimmy White was finally ...

INFO: www.mujerhoy.com

Hi my dear friends, I'm back again.  A lot of work and no time to write but I'm already with you.
Today it's a travel suggestion what I'm going to write about.

When I was there some years ago I got shocked because of the beauty and wonder of this place: NIAGARA FALLS!

I recommend you to go and experience the same sensation !

So I'd like  to  give you some information and show you around this marvellous place!

Photos: by my own.

NIAGARA FALLS    /    NATURAL WONDER

Niagara Falls are on the  border  between USA (New York State)  and Canada (Ontario).  Every minute, 140,000 cubic metres of water go over these waterfalls.  The water comes from the Lake Erie in USA (the Great Lakes area) and there are three falls:

**HORSESHOE FALLS, in Canada. (the most powerful)
**THE AMERICAN FALLS  (USA)
**BRIDAL VEIL FALLS on the US side too. (the smallest but the most beautiful)

These waterfalls have got the highest flow rate of any waterfall in the world!

TO RIDE THE FALLS

People have tried to ride the Falls in barrels, inner tubes (cámaras de neumáticos), on jetskis (motos de agua) etc   but this is an extremely dangerous activity!

In 1960 a young boy survived a descent over the Falls after a boating accident. The boy was only seven years old and was wearing a lifejacket (chaleco salvavidas).  It is supposed that a "water cone" saved him by forming to cushion (amortiguar) his fall.

Every year, the Falls are used by people to suicide!  It is impossible for  the Police to access the place!.

However, the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel was ANNIE TAYLOR a school teacher from Michigan.  It was in 1901 and to celebrate her 63rd birthday, wearing a SKIRT!
She had to test the barrel first, so she sent her cat over the Falls.  Cats have 7 lives !  Nevertheless, the cat didn't travel with her on the big day!

STUNTERS (especialistas)

There are plenty of daredevils (temerarios) that sometimes survive but sometimes don't!
A stuntman called Nik Wallenda, 33 years old,  crossed the Falls on a tightrope (cuerda floja) .  It was dark, windy and it was raining.
He set a world record.  He crossed over 60 metres above the water in half an hour!
The ABC TV insisted on securing him by a rope against Wallenda's wishes.

CANADA OR USA?

**From the Canadian side you can appreciate the enormous  power of the Falls . They have constructed Casinos, restaurants, bars etc on their side. A lot to offer!

**Americans have created  nice parkland to enjoy the Falls.  They have a lot to offer too!

**You have to walk across the border to experience both!

THE MAID OF THE MIST  - LA DAMA DE LA NIEBLA

*This is the name of a pleasure boat tha shows travellers the Falls in all its glory.

*The Maid of the Mist loads passengers about a kilometre downriver of the Falls.  The trip is about half an hour and the boat gets into some rough (agitadas) waters in front of the American Falls.  There you will find a  little bit of mist but when the boat arrives at the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side of the river, there is a lot of turbulence and the spray (espuma) is really heavy and it's difficult to breathe!  Finally you become completely wet!

*People don't realise how big the Falls are until they are looking up at it instead of standing at the top,. looking down!

*The thing that fascinates people is not so much the height but the width (anchura) and the volume of water that comes from a lake!

* Niagara Falls are in the heartland (corazón, centro) of North America and it isn't expected to see this natural wonder in the middle of a city!
There isn't any run-off (escapada - de agua) from the mountains or glaciers!

*Niagara Falls are near  the cities of Toronto (Canada) and Buffalo (USA) so there are couples who get married there as passengers aboard the Maid of the Mist!

*Casual weddings, second marriages, people renewing their vows (votos).  All these situations can be found on the Maid of the Mist!

**ACUDID a Centros y Profesores Titulados.

PORTOBELLO MARKET / A LONDON MUST / Portobello Market/ Obligado visitar en Londres

Hi my dear friends, after Christmas Time here we are again.  I hope the New Year will bring you all the best!

Today we'll look at a London classic: PORTOBELLO MARKET in Notting Hill District.

PORTOBELLO MARKET

This famous market is located on Portobello Road, that runs from North to South through the elegant district of Notting Hill.

Portobello Market is about 950 metres long.

There is a market every day except Sundays.

THE FAMOUS ANTIQUE MARKET IS ON SATURDAYS.

Portobello Road was in the past a county lane in the middle of fields.  Portobello Farm was set just there and Portobello Road connected Portobello Farm and Notting Hill.

The name "Portobello" comes from the Spanish town Puerto Bello in Panama which was captured by Admiral Edward Vernon in 1739.

The zone developped in the Victorian era and Notting Hill became a residential place.  In fact, it has got a lot of elegant houses and beautiful crescents (calles en forma de media luna) with terraced housing (casas adosadas).  This has given Notting Hill its unique character.

ANTIQUES

If you want to buy antiques, you should visit the market only on Saturdays if not, the rest of the week, except Sundays, you will find fruit and vegetables.

It is the largest antiques market in United Kingdom but if you want to find "a bargain" you'll have to haggle (regatear).

VINTAGE

Are you fond of second-hand products?  Do you like vintage clothes? So, go on Saturdays and Sundays. A lot of vintage clothes stalls will offer you anything and everything.  If you are tired, you'll find cafés, pubs and bars for lunch, have a  rest or have a cup of tea or coffee.

TIMETABLE

The market opens at 9 a.m. but at 11 a.m. is already very crowded!

It closes at 6 p.m. but many traders close down at 4 p.m. This is a good time to visit the fruit and vegetable area, especially on Saturdays. Traders shout out: "1 pound a box!" cause they are selling the last of their sctock!

CONSERVATION

This is a unique area in London so "The Friends of Portobello association" is now fighting to stop retail chains (cadenas de tiendas) from invading this special zone.

Most English towns and cities have the same shops with the same window displays but Portobello Road and Market remains unique with its small shops and arcades (galerías comerciales).

MORE INFO:  The nearest underground station is NOTTING HILL GATE  which is just a five-minute from the market.

You can reach Portobello Road from the underground station of KNIGHTSBRIDGE where you can find the famous HARROD'S and so you'll visit two different areas.

ARE YOU A NOTTING HILL FILM FAN?

If so, you can visit the locations of the famous romantic movie.

**However, you won't find a lot of the things you could see on the film like the Hugh Grant's blue door terrace house because it's no longer there.  It is a black door at 280 Westbourne Park Road which was the Hugh Grant's address.

**Most of the shops have closed or never existed.  THE TRAVEL BOOKSHOP exists but it has never been a bookshop but in Blenheim Crescent you'll see another bookshop on which The Travel Bookshop was based .

**In the opening scenes of the movie a drunken man comes out of a tattoo parlour (sala de tatauajes), that is Saints Tattoo Parlour at 201 Portobello Road. It is still there!

If you travel to London, don't forget to visit Portobello Market, you'll like it!!!

SEE YOU!
