DISASTERS! VOLCANOES!

Hi everybody, I'll give you some more information about natural disasters.
This time I'll write short ,  specified  and curious information.

VOLCANOES

** The cloud of ash from the eruption of Vesuvius in A.D. 79 crossed the Mediterranean Sea and reached North Africa.  Vesuvius has erupted more than seventy times.  It erupts once every twenty-seven years.

** When the island of Krakatau in Indonesia erupted in 1883, people in Australia heard it 5,000 kilometres away!  About 40,000 people died and only three parts of the island remained.  In 1927 a new island appeared which was called Anak Krakatau that means "child of Krakatau".

** Mount St. Helens in Washington State, USA on 18 May 1980 blew its top.  The top 400 metres of the mountain were blown into the sky, and a cloud of ash and gas followed.

** In November 1985, the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Colombia erupted.  The eruption was small but it caused a river of mud that covered the city of Armero and more than 20,000 people died.

** In 1963, in Iceland a volcano erupted under the sea and a new island  called Surtsey appeared. Nowadays, a lot of animals and plants are living there.

** In Cameroon, West Africa,  the Lake Nyos lies at the top of a volcano. In August 1986, a strange gas rose up from the lake and made a cloud over the villages nearby killing more than 1,200 people.
